Tim Sutton | Berlin International Film Festival 2020

Its a time of upheaval and unrest in Brooklyn. Its citizens are threatened by a rich real estate mogul who wants to demolish neighbourhoods to build car parks. Saul’s grandparents are two people facing this threat, and he feels he must take drastic action to stop it. Along the way he meets Zama, a young Muslim woman discovering her identity, and the two develop a deep bond. Its like Taxi Driver and Joker- but with a surprisingly sweet romance.

Five Days in Berlin

Yesterday I touched down back in England after spending five days in Berlin. I was in no fit state to write last night, but now, sat here with the first decent cup of tea I’ve had in a week, it’s time to talk about my time at the Berlin Film Festival. Admittedly, I only watched three films- which is bad. But I only really had three whole days, and I’ve never been to Berlin before, so obviously I needed to fit in some sightseeing as well. Berlinale 2020

Right now I’m packing my suitcase and realising that it might be a bit too late to learn basic German. Why? Because tomorrow morning I’m flying to Germany to attend the Berlin International Film Festival. I’m super excited because I’ve never been to anything like this before. I get back on Friday, so keep an eye on the website next weekend. I’m sure I’ll post lots of pictures I’ve taken at the festival, talk about my experience there and of course talk about the films I’ve watched!

The Worst Films Ever Made?

As much as I love writing about films, I’ve always struggled with the role that critics play. I’ve seen critically panned films that I really enjoyed, and there are ‘masterpieces’ that I hate. Why should the subjective view of a critic play such an important role in a films success? Are there common elements that critics look for when reviewing a film, and what makes a film bad? These are questions that I want to find an answer to.

As of the date of this post, there are 39 films on Rotten Tomatoes that hold a 0% rating. Every week I’m going to watch and review one of these films in an attempt to understand what common elements make a film ‘bad’ and frankly just to see if I actually enjoy them or if I agree with the critics response.
